On behalf of the Bulgarian Neuropsychoanalytic Laboratory, in partnership with the Institute for Mental Health and Development, we are pleased to invite you to a seminar with Prof. Nancy McWilliams and Prof. Michael Garrett.
The event will take place on December 5, 2025 (Friday), from 14:30 to 20:30 (Sofia, Bulgaria time, +2 GMT), entirely online via the Zoom platform.
As part of the event, a Pre-Event Educational Day is scheduled for November 23, 2025, from 11:00 to 17:30. The educational day is free of charge. It only requires you to mark your participation in it in the registration form.
Several seminar presentations will be offered to establish a shared understanding of the key concepts and terms that will be addressed by Prof. McWilliams and Prof. Garrett. The Educational Day is suitable for students (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral), as well as for trainees in therapeutic schools, but we also warmly welcome colleagues with more extensive professional experience.

About the Speakers:

Prof. Nancy McWilliams, PhD, is an emerita professor of psychology at Rutgers University and former president of the Psychoanalysis Division (Division 39) of the American Psychological Association an an honorary member of the American Psychoanalytic Association. She is the author of several seminal books, including Psychoanalytic Diagnosis, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: A Practitioner’s Guide, and Psychoanalytic Supervision. Prof. McWilliams has received numerous awards for her contributions to the field, among them the Rosalee Weiss Award, the Laughlin Distinguished Teacher Award, and several honors for scholarship and international academic excellence from APA Division 39. She also maintains a private practice in Lambertville, New Jersey. Official biography: Download biography.

Prof. Michael Garrett, MD, is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and serves as a faculty member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, affiliated with NYU Langone Health.
He has long-standing experience in public psychiatry, having served as Medical Director of North Central Bronx Hospital and as Deputy Director of Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital Medical Center in Manhattan.
His research interests include psychotherapy for psychosis, integrating psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral approaches, as well as the challenges of building therapeutic relationships with patients who perceive reality differently.
Prof. Garrett is the author of Psychotherapy for Psychosis: Integrating Cognitive-Behavioral and Psychodynamic Treatment, published by Guilford Press in 2019.
He has received the Distinguished Educator Award and the Distinguished Career Recognition Award from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Official biography: Download biography.
